Economists and traders claim that the amount of money that Cambodia spends on imports from China is up to more than 1/3 of Cambodia's total imports in the first semester of 2022. When production costs are low, it also helps to increase the competitiveness of Cambodia's exports to international markets as well.
Mr. Lim Heng, the vice-chairman of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, said that China was making significant contributions to the supply of raw materials to the factories in Cambodia for production or processing for export to international markets, especially in the textile sector. The textile sector is considered a priority sector that has contributed to supporting economic growth in Cambodia and will maintain sustainable employment, especially during the global crisis of the Covid 19 epidemic.
He added that most of the goods that Cambodia imports from China are fabrics, yarns, and other consumer goods, most of which serve the Textile sector. Even though imports from China are high, it is not a cause for concern, he said. Because most of those goods are used for production or processing to sell in the international market.
In 2021, Cambodia imported goods from China with the cost of a total of 9,684.34 million US dollars, an increase of 36.5% compared to 2020, and exports from Cambodia to China amounted to 1,510.53 million US dollars, an increase of 38.8 percent.
